What Alisher Usmanov said about Arsenal when he sold up to Stan Kroenke as Everton assets frozen

Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov has had his assets frozen as a result of the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

Russia president Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine last week, with troops on either side fighting for control of the capital Kyiv and other cities.

The invasion has been condemned by the rest of Europe and both FIFA and UEFA have banned Russian sides from competing in their tournaments with immediate effect.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich handed over stewardship of the Blues to the trustees of the club and Everton could find themselves with similar problems after news emerged that Usmanov, who has commercial ties to the Toffees, had had his assets frozen.

This could have all been happening at Arsenal, if Usmanov had stayed on the board of directors.

Usmanov, who is valued at $15.3billion (£11.4billion) as per Forbes, initially bought into Arsenal with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri in 2007.

The Russian billionaire was a shareholder until 2018, when he sold up to Stan Kroenke, making the American billionaire the majority shareholder.

And when he sold his shares, Usmanov made reference to Arsenal's future under Kroenke.

He said: "I have decided to sell my shares in Arsenal Football Club which could be the best football club in the world.

"I wish all the best and great success to this wonderful football club and to all those whose lives and careers are entwined in it."

The restrictions on Usmanov mean he cannot make funds available to Everton for the foreseeable future.

In their reasoning behind freezing his assets, the EU Council said: "Alisher Usmanov is a pro-Kremlin oligarch with particularly close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin."
