Chelsea fans were treated to four debuts as they edged past Everton at Goodison Park. Thomas Tuchel was able to rely on over £150m worth of new talent on the pitch as Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Conor Gallagher all made their first competitive appearances for the club.
Tuchel has been able to add five players to his squad with four of them available for the first game of the season and those that were included all impressed for the Blues.
Other than 18-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka, who didn't make the matchday squad despite nine first team players being left out, there was a first sight of the statement buys for Todd Boehly so far this summer. Both Sterling and Koulibaly started the game, the winger played 90 minutes and the Senegalese defender went off midway through the first half with cramp, Cucurella was used as a substitute to give rest to Ben Chilwell and Gallagher was offered his first minutes in stoppage time.
