On Tuesday, a fishing vessel off the coast of New Hampshire encountered a dramatic incident when a whale surfaced under the boat, causing it to capsize near Odiorne Point State Park. Fortunately, both occupants of the 23-foot center console boat are safe, thanks to the swift response of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard received a distress call, alerting them that the boat had overturned due to a whale breach. The occupants were thrown into the water as a result of the capsizing. In response, an urgent marine information broadcast was issued, and the Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor was promptly notified.
A quick-acting Good Samaritan came to the rescue, pulling both individuals out of the water. Miraculously, no injuries were reported in this harrowing ordeal.
Following the incident, the boat crew from Station Portsmouth assessed the situation and confirmed that the whale involved did not appear to be harmed. The Center of Coastal Studies Marine Animal Hotline and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were informed of the event for further monitoring and evaluation.
Efforts were made to salvage the vessel from the water, ensuring that the boat was recovered safely. The collaborative response from the Coast Guard, Good Samaritan, and other relevant authorities helped avert a potential tragedy and ensured the well-being of all individuals involved.
