Wexford GAA Chairman 'proud' of players after response to Lee Chin racial abuse

Wexford GAA Chair Micheal Martin has said he is 'proud' of players after their response to racial abuse directed at Lee Chin.

Tipperary and Wexford met on Saturday in a challenge game but the match was blown up early after abuse aimed at Chin could be heard coming from a supporter from the stands.

Wexford players are said to have challenged the supporter on his comments and Chairperson Micheal Martin has praised the players for their strong reaction.

Speaking on Morning Ireland, he said: "We in Wexford are proud of the response of our own players. I think they called out the action very promptly. It has been widely acknowledged what happened was wrong and appalling and there is no place for it in sport or society.

"On hearing the comments a number of our players would have challenged the supporter on what was said and would have challenged him quite strongly verbally and called out the action."

Martin has said that both Wexford and Tipperary GAA have been in contact with Croke Park and that a full investigation will take place..

Former Tipperary boss Liam Sheedy spoke in detail about the incident on the Sunday Game last night and condemned the abuse.

He said: "I think the association has to take a hard look at this because if that is the example you are going to set for young kids.

"There were a lot of people at the match and it's gone viral on social media so it's out there.

"People get heated and people get excited at matches but you cannot condone that type of behaviour and there is no place in the GAA for that.

"I expect the association will have to look into it and deal with it in the appropriate manner because it's not acceptable."
