West Lothian woman and dog 'continuously attacked' by swooping seagulls in back garden

This is the moment when a woman and pet dog were continuously attacked by swooping seagulls in her own back garden.

Melanie Potter Hughson from Broxburn shared the video of the unruly birds divebombing at her pooch as it played in her garden.

Melanie says this not the first time that the gulls have attacked passers-by in the area.

She says a small cat ‘narrowly escaped’ the defensive birds, who she believes are trying to protect their chicks that hatch around this time of year.

In the video, which was shared with Edinburgh Live, a seagull can be seen continuously diving down at her dog as it plays in the garden.

On several occasions the gull misses the pooch before it swoops back up into the sky in preparation for another attempt.

The small dog appears to stand its ground and scares the seagull away each time the bird tries to go after it.

Melanie said: “It happens every year at this time when the chicks hatch and will get steadily worse for the next month or so.

“Anybody who walks past gets dive-bombed by them, especially if they have a dog with them.

“I witnessed a small cat narrowly escape from it a few days ago.

“You cannot sit outside on that side of the building just now as they constantly swoop at you.”
