West Lothian taxi fares set to increase for first time in six years

Proposals which will see the basic fares for taxis and private hire cars across West Lothian increase are being put to the public.

West Lothian residents have a month to let the council know what they think about the planned increase, set to come into force in November, which could see a 40p rise in standard meter tariff.

Proposed increases will see tariff fares rise from a basic £2.60 and £3 at weekends to £3 and £3.40. Christmas and New Year basic fare charges will rise from £3.90 to £5.10. All other additional charges will also rise.

The increased charges follow consultation with the local hire car trade. It is proposed to increase the current maximum fare scales and charges that are in place for journeys within West Lothian in taxis and private hire cars which are fitted with meters.

The method of calculation of maximum fares has not risen since 5 April 2016. The effect of the changes is that if the revised fare table is approved, meters will be altered so more will be charged for the distance travelled.

In addition, the time periods during which the increased Christmas and New Year tariff can be charged will increase by five hours, and some additional charges are proposed to be increased.

For journeys starting or ending outside West Lothian, or unmetered hire cars, fares should be agreed in advance with the driver.

Full details of the proposed changes have been recently advertised in the local press as per the legal requirements, and are available to view at: www.westlothian.gov.uk/taxi-and-private-hire-cars.

Anyone who wishes to make a representation regarding the proposals must do so before 14 July 2022 in writing to Carol Johnston, Chief Solicitor, at West Lothian Civic Centre, Livingston, EH54 6FF or email carol.johnston@westlothian.gov.uk

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “We would encourage anyone who wishes to make a comment on the proposed new maximum rates for taxi and metered private hire cars to let us know as soon as possible.

“The deadline for responses is 14 July 2022, with any increases coming into force from 22 November 2022.”
