West Lothian students' recycled outfits earn them place in prestigious global fashion competition

A team of talented students have won a place in a global fashion competition by making imaginative outfits out of nothing by recycled materials.

The pupils - Lucy Sneddon, Sarah Aitken, Chloe Steven along with teachers Mrs Alison McGinlay and Mrs Dawn Brennan from West Calder High will soon travel to Abu Dhabi to take part in the Junk Kouture competition.

The event aims to shine a light on the importance of climate change through creativity and self expression and is the world’s largest sustainable youth fashion competition for young people between the ages of 13 and 18 years old.

Following months of hard work and showcasing their creative talents at the City Finals earlier this year London. West Calder High School's entry Stylish Butterflies has reached the event’s grand finale.

Teacher Anne Don explained: “The team of three S4 pupils will be heading off to Yas Island, Abu Dhabi in January 2023 alongside other secondary schools from across the globe - New York, London, Paris, Milan, UAE and Ireland, where they aim to be crowned Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year 2022.

“Based on the design brief ‘Sustainability’ the team got their thinking caps on a designing a Couture evening gown using calico as the dress which has Over the next few weeks, the team will be creating a remote content capture displaying video footage and photographs of the design to showcase their creativity.

“Planning is underway for a busy few days in January, culminating in the grand showcase where our very own Lucy shall be walking the runway in the Etihad Arena in front of a jam-packed stadium.”
