West Lothian Election 2022: Big change in Linlithgow as long-serving provost retires

The retiral of a long-standing councillor who has served as West Lothian's Provost for more than a decade will give voters a new choice in the Linlithgow ward.

The ward takes in Linlithgow, Bridgend, Philpstoun Newton and Beecraigs in the north of the county. Fiercely proud of its heritage and traditions the biggest story in Linlithgow this year has been a row over a pub’s name.

Townsfolk were angered when a brewery chain decided that the Black Bitch could be considered offensive as a name for one of its hostelries. There was widespread anger from local people, many of whom brand themselves as Black Bitch, as a term for a native. But, despite a vociferous campaign, the name - which refers to a local legend - was lost as Greene King opted for the Willow Tree.

Equally controversial in the town is the future of the Vennel development next to the ancient Linlithgow Palace on the shore of Linlithgow Loch. A prizewinning piece of architecture from the late 1960s, the buildings, a mix of council and private flats and some rundown shop units, have few fans. There is keen debate on what should change, and what can be done to improve the area.

Other issues which dominated the news include housing development putting pressure on existing roads and ever growing traffic and parking issues in the town’s high street.

2017 Results:

Tom Kerr, Conservative: 41.92% FPv (3,037 total)

Tom Conn, Labour: 14.63% FPv (1,956 total)

David Tait, SNP: 16.01% FPv (2,529 total)

2022 Candidates

The home for the last 30 years to Conservative councillor Tom Kerr, who has served as the Provost for the last 15 years, Linlithgow will see new candidates vying for votes in the ward based around the ancient burgh.

As Provost Kerr retires, his shoes are filled by Linlithgow resident Chris Horne. He is currently a serving Conservative councillor in the neighbouring Broxburn, Uphall and Winchburgh ward who will fly the Tories flag in the town. Labour veteran Tom Conn will be looking to retain his seat.

The third seat will see a range of parties fight for the third place held until this year by the SNP formerly Martyn Day, now the local MP, and latterly David Tait, who is stepping down. Pauline Orr takes up the SNP banner.

Sally Pattle, a community councillor and local bookstore owner, will contest the ward for the Lib Dems. The Greens have Pamela Barnes, who works for the local Community Development Trust and Rik Smith will represent the Scottish Family Party.
