Just 26 seconds later, Murphy had the ball in the Hammers' net after the visitors countered to blistering effect. In the 11th minute, the looming negativity continued as Bowen was brought down by Thiaw for an initial penalty before the VAR suggested that the defender had got enough of the ball to overturn the decision. A Paqueta pinger restored parity 10 minutes before the interval, while Botman sliding a Wan-Bissaka cross into Pope's goal gave the Hammers the lead in stoppage time. The second period was a scrappy one, yet a toothless Newcastle just couldn't fight back with a 0.54 xG. Soucek made it 3-1 with practically the last kick of the game to really help the Irons play above their 1.58 xG.
