West Ham United completed the sales of two academy defenders during Tuesday’s January transfer deadline day.
Announced 15 minutes after the window shut, left-back Manny Longelo left the Hammers in a £400,000 move to Birmingham City, turning his season long loan with the Championship side into a permanent switch.
Earlier in the day, West Ham also completed the sale of right-back Harrison Ashby to Newcastle United for £3million (plus add-ons), a move that not only bought money into the club, but also gives them an easier task when sorting contracts out at the end of this season.

Of West Ham’s squad, five players, including Ashby, had contracts that were due to expire in the summer. With the defender now gone, it makes the task of deciding who to keep and release much easier.
The Hammers still have four players with contracts set to expire this summer. Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, right-back Vladimir Coufal, centre-back Angelo Ogbonna and midfielder Manuel Lanzini all currently have deals that are due to run out on June 30.
Of the quartet, Lanzini and Coufal have options in their contracts that can be triggered to extend their stays by two years. Goalkeeper Fabianski can also have his contract extended by a further 12 months
