West Ham's hopes of a Jesse Lingard return hit major barrier despite Newcastle transfer collapse

Jesse Lingard is a man in demand this transfer window but despite West Ham's interest in the former Hammer returning to the club a deal looks unlikely to materialise for David Moyes' team.

West Ham have made no secret of their interest in Lingard, both last summer and in this window with Stuart Pearce publicly stating the Hammers' desire to bring him back to east London.

However, with West Ham challenging Manchester United for a European spot, the Old Trafford club are reluctant to let Lingard leave for a rival and have rejected approaches from the Hammers and Tottenham Hotspur.

With the clock ticking on the January transfer window any further approaches from West Ham are set to be a tough ones despite Newcastle United reportedly pulling out of their own loan move.

The Magpies are understood to have baulked at the terms of the deal Manchester United require, including a large bonus if the club manage to avoid relegation from the Premier League, and as such this has opened the door for a number of other Premier League clubs to consider an approach.

According to talkSPORT Leicester, Everton and Aston Villa are now all considering making moves for the England international with Lingard keen to depart his boyhood club after failing to make an impact this season.

Lingard is keen on a return to West Ham. But as both teams battle for a a place in the top-four, United are wary at strengthening a direct rival and would be open to a move further down the table.

On Lingard's part, the attacking-midfielder is pushing for a move in order to get back playing and attempt to fight his way back into Gareth Southgate's England squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Lingard's form for West Ham saw him recalled to the Three Lions set up, but despite making the provisional Euro 2020 squad he was axed from the final 26 and his recent lack of game time has seen him fall out of contention as far as Southgate is concerned.
