West Ham’s Alphonse Areola posts cryptic social media message after frustrating Tottenham defeat

West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has posted a cryptic message on Instagram after the Hammers’ Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old French stopper is yet to feature from the start of a Premier League game this season, with experienced Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski preferred to him by manager David Moyes.

After missing 1-1 draws with Newcastle United and Chelsa through a hamstring injury, Areola was back on the West Ham bench for the defeat to Tottenham, but again missed out on featuring, with Fabianski preferred.

The 2018 World Cup winner has only made two appearances in the Premier League this season, both coming on as a substitute against Manchester City and Manchester United in place of Fabianski, who went off injured on both occasions.

Areola’s ten starts this season have all come outside of the Premier League, eight of which have been in the Europa Conference League.

Following the disappointing defeat and his lack of game time, Areola took to Instagram to vent his frustrations.

“People like to be around those who give off positive energy…” Areola posted, followed by a cloud emoji.

Areola is not the only player to have posted on social media recently, with midfielders Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals doing the same ahead of the London derby defeat.

The former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has made 30 appearances for the club since joining last season, initially on loan. Of those, 19 have been in the Europa League and Europa Conference League, making just three league outings.
