West Ham release statement after German journalists 'attacked' during Frankfurt clash

West Ham United have released a statement after German journalists were reportedly attacked during Thursday evening's Europa League clash against Frankfurt.

It was a disappointing night for the east London outfit, with the Bundesliga side coming out on top, clinching a 2-1 win at the London Stadium ahead of next week's second leg in Germany. However, the match was marred by an unsavoury incident involving some supporters and German journalists and the Hammers released a statement addressing this after the match.

A spokesperson from the club said: “The Club is aware of the incident and will be working to identify the offender. In line with our zero-tolerance approach, anyone identified will have their details passed to the police."

It was an entertaining first leg and it was the away side who got off to the perfect start, breaking the deadlock through Ansgar Knauff after just 49 seconds. David Moyes' men fought back, equalising through Jamaican international Michail Antonio in the 21st minute, although Japanese star Daichi Kamada restored his side the lead after the break.

Still, the Hammers are far from dead in the tie, especially when you consider they secured a famous 3-0 away win against Lyon in the quarter-finals. Speaking after the match, Moyes said: "When you come down to it you are to do the right things at the right moment but we didn’t quite connect.

"There were moments in the second half where we couldn’t do it. We’d get to the byline and we weren't able to do it. We had chances and we didn’t do it well enough."
