West Ham player ratings: Brighton curse continues as Thilo Kehrer's moment of madness costs side

West Ham United's run of defeats in the Premier League continued with a 2-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion at the London Stadium.

Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half before Leandro Trossard completed the scoring in the second half, leaving the Hammers in the relegation zone and without a point from their opening three games.

Here is how Football.London’s West Ham United writer Jonty Colman rated the Hammers’ players against the Seagulls.

Lukasz Fabianski

Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was back in the side after being left out of the squad and rested for Thursday night's 3-1 first leg win over Danish side Viborg. Little he could do about the opening goal as he was beaten from 12 yards but would have hoped to have done better for the second goal when Trossard slotted past him with ease. 5

Vladimir Coufal

Vladimir Coufal was one of three players to start in midweek and against Brighton, with the Czech Republic international moved back to right-back having played on the left against Viborg. Looked one of the most likely to create something when getting forward and crossing into the box on another day where creativity and attacking quality was simply lacking from the hosts. Forced off injured late on, a further blow to the Hammers' problems. 6

Kurt Zouma

Kurt Zouma was among those afforded a midweek rest and was partnered by not only a recognised centre-back for the first time all season, but one who helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Ligue 1 title last term. The Hammers want to build from the back, but it was doing that which led to Brighton's opener. Zouma was caught out on posession well past the halfway line to allow Brighton to counter and win a spot-kick, which Mac Allister slotted with ease. Again at fault for Trossard's goal, with Pascal Gross beating him too easily with a clever bit of skill to put Trossard clean through on goal. 4

Thilo Kehrer

There was full debut for Thilo Kehrer just a couple of days after making his debut from the bench against Viborg, playing a big role in Michail Antonio's goal that night. On debut, Kehrer had looked really assured in possession until a moment of absolute madness midway through the half changed the game. With Danny Welbeck breaking towards the box on a counter attack, Kehrer erratically slid in rashly to give the visitors a penalty. Barring that, there was not too much wrong with his overall display, but his error was costly in turning the tide of the game. 6

Aaron Cresswell

One of two players banned against Viborg, the suspension gave Aaron Cresswell a needed rest, given he is the club's only natural left-back at present, amid interest in Chelsea's Emerson. Created one or two chances from his crossing but barring that, had difficulty keeping on top of Solly March on his side. 5

Declan Rice (Star man)

Captain Declan Rice was also afforded a rare rest in midweek due to suspension but was back alongside Tomas Soucek in the heart of midfield to face the Seagulls. The Hammers' skipper was great in breaking up play and turning defence into attack quickly, really imposing on a Brighton side that otherwise found the first half rather comfortable and one that they were able to dictate at their own pace. Less impressive in the second half but still showed a willingness to get the Hammers out of the rut they found themselves in. 6

Tomas Soucek

Soucek went into the game knowing he definitely could have, and probably should have, scored his first goal of the season a week ago with multiple clear-cut chances against Nottingham Forest. Had the Hammers' two best chances late on from headed crosses within quick succession from Ben Johnson and then Cresswell. Quiet in his attempts to defend and break up play, with Rice doing much of the dirty work. 5

Jarrod Bowen

Jarrod Bowen opened his account with a wondergoal in midweek and hoped to kick on his season off the back of strike against Viborg. Really quiet in the first half and despite starting it with some encouragement as he looked to break forward quickly, the quality in his pass or final action just seemed to be lacking a certain touch of class. Failed to kick on from his goal in midweek and is still missing replicating last season's form in a Premier League game. 5

Pablo Fornals

Preferred to Manuel Lanzini in the No.10 role for a second straight match, Pablo Fornals appears to be preferred at present to his Argentine counterpart, with the Spaniard operating centrally more so than off the left. In a central role, Fornals was able to use a turn of pace and intercept and play crucial forward passes that did give Moyes' men reason to be excited going forward, anything that looked good going forward often went through him. Had a shot in the second half that worked Robert Sanchez for the first time in the game and was unfortunate to be taken off shortly after that. 6

Said Benrahma

The Hammers' best outfield player against Forest and assisting the Irons' third goal minutes after coming off the bench against Viborg, a second straight league start will have undoubtedly given Said Benrahma confidence going into the game. Had an early chance but his overall quality of passing and ball retention was just well off its best. Another start for the Algerian is important in him keeping his place, but quite the drop off from his last two outings. 5

Michail Antonio

Michail Antonio, like Bowen and Gianluca Scamacca, opened their accounts for the campaign in midweek. Perhaps Antonio's was more impressive, having scored from close range a true poacher's finish. Very quiet on the whole, more effective early in the second half at battling and making the Brighton back line work, ending his performance as a left winger before being taken off. 5

Substitutes

Gianluca Scamacca

It took until the 62nd minute to see £30.5million man Gianluca Scamacca introduced three days after a goal on his full debut against Viborg. Did not get much of a kick but did hold the ball up well when he got a chance and passed it well, creating one good chance with a knock down. Expecting to get another start in the second leg at Viborg. 5

Ben Johnson

Coming on for the injured Cornet, it was the first game this season where Johnson did not play every minute. Did make one good chance for Soucek with a cross from wide. 5

Maxwel Cornet

On for Benrahma, Cornet was quiet. Again, among those hoping for another run out in Denmark on Thursday. 5

Manuel Lanzini

Did little when coming on in the No.10 role, will need to really recapture his best to get back in Moyes' best side. 5
