West Ham manager David Moyes makes Hammers midfield decision in January transfer window

West Ham's Republic of Ireland U21 international Conor Coventry has joined MK Dons on loan for the remainder of the season.

Coventry, who has featured in the senior Republic of Ireland set-up this season, was recalled earlier this month from his previous loan spell at Peterborough United.

His move to the Championship outfit was an unsuccessful one, with Coventry only featuring in 12 matches and failing to nail down a regular spot, with only four of his league appearances coming in the starting XI.

As a result, West Ham exercised their right to terminate the season-long loan and bring him back to the London Stadium. Since his return, Coventry made two appearances in the Premier League 2 team, scoring a superb 20-yard strike against Leeds United and featuring in last week's clash with Arsenal.

Peterborough wished Coventry well after his short stint at the club, Posh manager Darren Ferguson said: "It was unfortunate that he did not get more minutes, but he was a fantastic professional and I enjoyed working with him. I wish him all the best in the future."

A club statement echoed the manager's comments: "The club would like to thank Conor for his efforts."

The midfielder will now join League One side MK Dons until the end of the season as Liam Manning, a former West Ham U23 coach, looks to lead his side to promotion.

MK Dons are just four points off an automatic promotion spot and currently sit comfortably in the play-off positions.

Competition for starts will be fierce as a result of the Dons fine form but Coventry will be hopeful the step down a division enables him to see regular first-team football and aid in his development after a disappointing first half to the season.

“I’m delighted to be here,” Coventry said. “This is a club moving in a really good direction and hopefully I can help make a positive impact towards that.

“I know how the team plays and it’s something that suits me. I am a player who will always give my all and look to get on the ball, dictate play and help keep possession.

“I obviously know the manager from his time at West Ham. He is someone I trust and who really helped my development so I am looking forward to working with him again and hopefully I can repay his and the club’s faith with my performances.”
