West Ham man breaks down in tears on pitch as Burnley's Ashley Westwood suffers horrific injury

Nikola Vlasic was left in tears after Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood suffered what looks to be a serious injury at the London Stadium. West Ham hosted Burnley on Sunday afternoon but Westwood was forced to leave the field on a stretcher after a collision with Vlasic.

The game was temporarily paused for more than five minutes as medics attended to Westwood. As per the Daily Star, the 32-year-old smiled as he was carried off the pitch to applause from both sets of fans.

The two came together in an unfortunate collision in the 22nd minute of the clash, with the score tied at 0-0. Westwood immediately signalled to the bench for treatment, as Vlasic turned around and saw the injury for himself. The West Ham man was brought to tears as he realised how serious the problem could be.

Hammers teammates, as well as Maxwell Cornet of Burnley, were quick to console Vlasic as no blame was put on the midfielder for his part in what happened. Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder Ray Houghton also said: "Sometimes the most innocuous challenges can turn out to be the biggest injuries.

"If I was the managers, I'd be getting the players away from Westwood; let the medical teams deal with it. The doctors are there, the physios are there. He's getting on a stretcher; I'm sure he'll go to hospital and get checked over."

Everyone at both clubs will be hoping that the injury isn't as bad as it first seems, whilst they'll also wish that he recovers quickly and is back on the pitch as soon as possible.
