West Ham make late attempt to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United

West Ham have made an 11th-hour approach to re-sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.

United rebuffed an enquiry from West Ham earlier this month but the London club have contacted Lingard's representatives again after he discussed his future with interim United manager Ralf Rangnick.

Lingard, 29, returned to United training at Carrington on Monday morning and Rangnick reiterated to Lingard he had permission to leave as he is not in his plans for the remainder of the season.

It is unclear if United would be prepared to let Lingard go to West Ham, where he had a transformative effect last season. Lingard scored nine goals in 16 appearances and United leapfrogged West Ham to go fourth in the Premier League table by beating them 1-0 only nine days ago.

The Manchester Evening News revealed earlier this month Lingard's preference was to return to London despite firm interest from Newcastle. A loan move to Newcastle collapsed last week after United insisted on a survival bonus from the 18th-placed side.

Newcastle have shortlisted Lingard as a possible deadline day loan option and the England international is prepared to join them if Newcastle can successfully renegotiate with United. United would demand a loan fee for Lingard.

The MEN reported last week Burnley, bottom of the Premier League, have been suggested as an alternative for Lingard but it is unclear if they could finance a deal. Leicester, Everton and Aston Villa are also monitoring Lingard's situation.

Tottenham expressed interest in Lingard, albeit with a view to agreeing a move in the summer.
