West Ham injury boost as Nayef Aguerd returns to training ahead of Europa League clash with Gent

Nayef Aguerd is in contention to return for West Ham’s vital Europa Conference League quarter-final against Gent on Thursday.

Aguerd missed Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal after suffering a heel injury in last week’s first leg away in Belgium.

The Moroccan trained with the rest of the Hammers squad at Rush Green on Wednesday morning, as did Angelo Ogbonna, who also missed the Arsenal game with a knock.

The Italian is suspended for Thursday’s second leg after picking up a yellow card in Belgium, but Aguerd’s potential availability would be a boost to David Moyes, who was left with Kurt Zouma and Thilo Kehrer as his only available centre-backs against Arsenal.

The quarter-final tie is level at 1-1, with Danny Ings’ opener having been cancelled out by Gent’s Hugo Cuypers last week.

Moyes’ side are looking to reach a second successive European semi-final, having lost to Eintracht Frankfurt in the last four of last season’s Europa League.

West Ham then face Bournemouth on Sunday and Liverpool next Wednesday, in what could be huge week in their season.
