West Ham handed Cristiano Ronaldo boost as Hammers prepare for clash with Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt for the visit of West Ham to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon according to Manchester United boss Ralph Rangnick.

Ronaldo was substituted against Brentford in mid-week, much to the player's displeasure, and the star is now a doubt having picked up a neck injury during the encounter.

The Portuguese is not the only doubt for Manchester United with a number of other first-team players ruled out or facing late fitness checks for the visit of David Moyes' team.

"Cristiano is a question mark because he has a problem with his neck," Rangnick told the club website. "He received treatment yesterday for two to three hours and we will have to wait to see how he feels today."

Uruguayan striker Edison Cavani is another with a question mark hanging over his selection according to the interim manager: "Edi hasn’t been training with the team yet and will hopefully resume training today and then we’ll take the final decision after the training session today, [around] if he will be available for the game tomorrow."

Rangnick confirmed defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is out of the match but former Hammer Jesse Lingard could feature.

"Aaron will still be missing," said Rangnick. "He’s still ill. Jesse resumed back for training yesterday and he will be training today so he should be available for the game.

"We need to see where Jadon [Sancho] stands. He didn’t train yesterday. As you know, he attended a funeral on Wednesday and didn’t want to train yesterday as he is still affected by that. We will have to see.

"I will see him for training today and speak with him after the training session, to see if he is in the state of mind, and also his energy [is there], so he can be available for tomorrow."

Manchester United will also be without Victor Lindelof after the Swede's home was broken into on Wednesday evening.

"Victor said to me that he right now needs to stay at home," said Rangnick. "He doesn't want to leave his wife and his family on their own, which I can fully understand being a father of two children myself.

"We agreed that he will not be training today and also not be on duty tomorrow for the game."

Bar long-term absentee Angelo Ogbonna and Said Benrahma, who is yet to return from AFCON duty, West Ham could have a full squad to choose from at Old Trafford.

Moyes confirmed that Kurt Zouma and Tomas Soucek are back in training following injury and COVID enforced absences although the manager is yet to decide whether the pair are fit enough to be included from the start against his former team.

On Soucek, Moyes said: "Tomas came back from COVID, we are not quite sure exactly how ready he is or if he is ready so we need to assess that and see exactly where he is."
