West Ham duo walking suspension tightrope ahead of AEK Larnaca Europa Conference League tie

Two of West Ham United’s players are currently one booking away from getting a one-match ban in the Europa Conference League.

The Hammers head to Cyprus on Thursday to take on Cypriot league leaders AEK Laranca inside the AEK Arena in the first of two legs in the Europa Conference League’s round of 16.

For David Moyes’ side, it will see them complete a round trip of over 5,000 miles, returning to England just two days before playing host to Aston Villa in the Premier League at the London Stadium.

In Europe’s three club competitions, players receive a one-match ban if they reach three yellow cards between the group stages beginning and the quarter-finals ending.

While West Ham have not had any yellow card suspensions in the competition this term, two members of their squad are currently on two yellow cards, meaning that should they be banned during Thursday’s first leg, they will be banned for the second leg a week later on Thursday, March 16.

Midfielder Flynn Downes and centre-back Angelo Ogbonna have both been carded twice so far in the competition this season (not including the qualifying round win over Viborg), meaning they are one booking away from a ban. However, Ogbonna is a doubt for the tie, having gone off injured against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday.

While the duo are on two bookings, 13 others have been booked once so far this season. However, that 13 includes midfielder Conor Coventry, who is currently out on loan with Championship side Rotherham United.
