West Ham 1-1 Newcastle: Hammers suffer fresh blow in race for Champions League

West Ham and Newcastle drew 1-1 in the Premier League’s early kick-off on Saturday.

Newcastle started brightest and almost broke the deadlock when Declan Rice allowed Joelinton to steal in at the far-post, forcing Lukasz Fabianski into action.

But the Magpies struggled to test the goalkeeper again and went behind after Emil Krafth downed Michail Antonio on the left flank. Aaron Cresswell’s cross picked out Craig Dawson perfectly for a free header.

West Ham looked to be going into the break with the lead until Rice again made an error in his own area, scuffing a clearance into the air which Joe Willock squeezed over the line via the post.

The energy levels quickly began to dip in the second-half after an early spell of home pressure. Both goalkeepers were largely spared from the action as the game fizzled out and the points were shared.

West Ham host Wolves next weekend while Newcastle, now unbeaten in six league games, are back in the capital to face Brentford.
