West Dunbartonshire's MP renews calls for Boris Johnson to resign

West Dunbartonshire’s MP has renewed calls for Boris Johnson to resign as police revealed they are investigating claims that Downing Street held lockdown breaking parties.

Martin Docherty-Hughes says local residents “are angry at the contempt” shown by the Conservative government.

Revelations, which emerged on Monday, allege the Prime Minister held a lockdown-breaking birthday bash in 2020.

It’s claimed up to 30 staff celebrated with the Tory leader in Downing Street Cabinet room on June 19 where his wife, Carrie, surprised him with a cake.

He will face questions at Prime Ministers Questions at noon today.

It come as senior civil servant, Sue Gray, finalises her report into allegations of multiple parties in Downing Street during the pandemic, which is reportedlydue to be delivered later today.

Calls for Johnson to quit over the scandal are growing with West Dunbartonshire’s MP making fresh calls for him to resign.

The SNP MP said: “In West Dunbartonshire and across the country people are angry at the contempt shown by this Tory government.

“Throughout the pandemic my constituents have followed the rules - missing birthdays, weddings, funerals, and births to help keep our communities safe. We were asked to sacrifice so much by the very people in Downing Street who think the rules don’t apply to them.

“It’s shameful that Boris Johnson still refuses to resign. While the Prime Minister desperately tries to cling on to his job, this Tory government is failing to lift a finger to tackle the cost-of-living crisis for which it is responsible.

“Time and again our communities are being let down by those in Downing Street, but getting rid of Boris Johnson alone won’t solve the problem. We need Scottish independence so we can rid ourselves of Westminster sleaze and corruption once and for all.”

Yesterday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed it has launched an investigation into parties held in No 10 during the coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioner Cressida Dick said they were looking into “potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations” in Downing Street and Whitehall since 2020.

She confirmed officers will look into “a number of events” where Covid lockdown rules were said to have been broken in Whitehall.

The Prime Minister said he welcomed the police investigation, insisting it would “give the public the clarity it needs” over the allegations and “help draw a line under the matter”.
