KOLKATA: At a programme on International Mother Language Day on Monday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the Bengal government will set up a memorial to honour Abul Barkat, one of the five language martyrs, at his village, Babla, in Salar, Murshidabad.
The CM directed the information & cultural affairs department officials to visit the spot immediately to set up the memorial as she wanted to highlight the contribution of Barkat, who was killed along with Abdus Salam, Rafiq Uddin, Abdur Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman by the Pakistan police on February 21, 1952. Unesco, in 2002, announced February 21 as the International Mother Language Day to promote preservation and protection of all languages.
