KOLKATA: The postal department, Bengal circle, on Monday released a special cover titled “Remembering Lata Mangeshkar”.
J Charukesi, chief postmaster general, West Bengal, Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, released the special cover in the presence of Niraj Kumar, postmaster general (Kolkata region) and other eminent personalities, like film-maker Goutam Ghose and singer Antara Choudhury, daughter of music director Salil Chowdhury.
Choudhury said, “My father reserved his best creations for Lata didi because he knew she would do justice to them.” Charukesi said, “Lata Mangeshkar is an inspiration for all future generations.”
India’s nightingale, who passed away on February 6, has had a special bond with Bengal. She sang thousands of songs in over 36 languages, of which more than 180 were in Bengali — the second highest after Hindi. She sang for legends like Salil Chowdhury, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, S D Burman and R D Burman. Under their direction, Lata Mangeshkar’s Rabindrasangeet, modern Bengali numbers and even Puja specials, created by Salil Chowdhury and others, continue to strike a chord with listeners.
