West Bengal: Lake Town to get new fire station

KOLKATA: Keeping up with local demands, the state fire and emergency services department will set up a new fire station at the Lake Town market area close to VIP Road, a densely populated area with both residential and commercial complexes.

"There was a long time requirement for having a fire station at the Lake Town market vicinity area. It will be a three pump fire station which has been planned," said fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose.

The Kolkata metropolitan development authority (KMDA) has initiated the process to engage an agency to design and construct the Rs 3.4-crore fire station project. A project completion deadline of nine months from the date of commencing the project has been fixed.

Locals said that there has been a long pending requirement to have a fire station at the area as it has grown up as a congested and densely populated place with several residential and commercial multi-storey buildings.

"Presently in case of any fire emergency, the nearest fire stations are at Maniktala, Salt Lake Sector V or Dum Dum from where fire tenders takes a little time to reach here. There are localities in and around Lake Town which have narrow lanes and having a fire station near by will help the fire tenders to reach the spots quickly," said a local.

Fire department officials said that the new fire station will have all modern and advanced fire fighting tools and equipment. It was only last year, that a three pump fire station was inaugurated in New Town.
