West Bengal: Ex-cricketer beats cancer to start a new innings

KOLKATA: For 33-year-old Jayashree Sarkar, winning over oral cancer was no different from turning the tables on her opponents in a game of cricket through sheer grit and determination — qualities that often helped her fight back as a member of the Bengal Under-19 team.

Jayashree was detected with cancer of the mouth in November 2020. Despite the raging pandemic, doctors Sourav Datta and Harsh Dhar did not delay her treatment. The two head and neck onco-surgeons conducted a surgery to remove her tongue and reconstruct it in December 2020. The numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy that followed had left her frail but failed to dampen her spirits.
