West Bengal: 22-year-old kills drunk dad after domestic abuse

KOLKATA: Unable to bear domestic violence perpetrated by his alcoholic father, a 22-year-old youth shot his 45-year-old father dead and later set him on fire before surrendering to police at Gobrapur in North 24 Parganas on Saturday night.

Police arrested Ashanur Goldar and produced him in court. The firearm was recovered from a paddy field near his house. Victim Mohar Goldar, a resident of Keutipara near Bongaon, was a trader. “Goldar used to engage in drunken brawl after returning home. He also beat up his kin, including his wife,” said Safiqul Gazi, a neighbour.

On Saturday evening, Goldar went on a rampage after returning home in an inebriated state. “He started beating his wife. Ashanur rescued his mother and sent her to a neighbour’s house. Then Goldar attacked Ashanur after which the latter took out a gun and fired at him. Later Goldar’s charred body was found in the courtyard,” another local said. Cops are probing how he got the gun.
