Wesley Sneijder takes fresh swipe at Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk following awards snub

Dutch icon Wesley Sneijder has taken a bizarre swipe at Liverpool defender and Holland captain Virgil van Dijk.

The former Ajax, Real Madrid and Inter Milan attacking midfielder has claimed his compatriot snubbed him at the FIFA TheBest awards following criticism of the defender.

The 31-year-old will be looking to complete the perfect week on Sunday by beating the Reds' fierce rivals Manchester United on Sunday as Erik ten Hag's side visit Anfield. It has been a busy week for the central defender, on Monday he was in Paris picking up an award at FIFA's TheBest award after he was named in the Men's Best XI.

Just days later, he was on target in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Wolves as they moved to within six points of the top four. Van Dijk was on hand to power a header home after his initial effort from Jose Sa was saved.

It's been a frustrating season for Jurgen Klopp's side and with their indifferent results, the defender has come underfire as a result. After returning from injury against Real Madrid, he received further criticism as they slipped to a 5-2 first leg defeat.

Sneijder, who made 134 international appearances for Oranje, has taken the opportunity to take aim at the Liverpool defender after reflecting on his experience at the event in the French capital.

"FIFA The Best? It was fun, it's nice to see old faces again," the 38-year-old said via Vangaad Inside.

"I saw Messi too after a long time. I saw Virgil van Dijk too, but from a distance, I think he wasn't really happy as I have been critical about him.

"He didn't come up to me. He can't really take criticism."
