No one knows why Lauren Williams' vision has deteriorated at an alarming rate. A problem which started five years ago with headaches and a slight squint has reached a point where the 15-year-old struggles to see more than six metres in front of her.
Lauren, from Caernarfon, had been wearing a mild prescription of glasses for long-sightedness for around a year when mum Stacey Conway took her to see an optician in 2017 after the squint had seemed to come "out of the blue". Tests led to concerns of a pressure build-up around her brain, but there has been no diagnosis — and Lauren's sight has declined so much she can no longer read food labels and experts have warned she could soon be registered blind.
Stacey, 36, said: "We've been told that if her eyesight stays this way, she can't ever drive a car. She wants to get a job in a cafe like her peers, but she wouldn't be able to. She's got questions I can't give her answers to. It's the not knowing what her future holds. She is scared she will wake up one day and not be able to see at all."
