Welsh Government spent £200,000 on TikTok adverts in two years

The Welsh Government has spent more than £200,000 on TikTok advertisements in the last two years.

In 2020-21 the spend was £135,110.95 and for the period April 2021 to January 2022 it was £102,216.86.

The figures were revealed after a question by Conservative group leader Andrew RT Davies.

In the period 2017-20 there had been no TikTok spending.

One advert used on Tiktok asked people to slow the spread of Omicron and "disrupt the transmission" of Covid 19.

TikTok is a social media site which shows short video clips to users. It started as a 15-second limit but has recently begun trialling videos of up to three minutes. It has a reported 689m users a month.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “TikTok is an important channel to communicate vital public health advice to a younger audience during the pandemic alongside advertising on other digital and traditional media channels.”
