Welsh Government responds to Boris Johnson's decision to scrap masks rules in England

Boris Johnson has today announced the easing of Covid restrictions brought in before Christmas, and known as Plan B.

The embattled Prime Minister has said that in England, working from home rules end today, Wednesday, January 19, and the rule making children wear masks in classrooms will end tomorrow, Thursday.

It will no longer be legally-required to wear masks anywhere from Thursday next week in England. And then, when Plan B measures lapse, Covid passes will also no longer be legally required for nightclubs and major events.

Self isolation rules for people who have Covid will end on March 24. Boris Johnson said the legal requirement on people with coronavirus to self-isolate will be allowed to lapse when the regulations expire on March 24, and that date could be brought forward.

The Welsh Government has begun easing its restrictions in a four-part plan. You can read that in full here.

The next review is due to be on Friday, January 21. There have been questions as to whether Wales' stricter rules have made a difference.

We asked the Welsh Government what its plans were in relation to masks, classroom rules and self isolation.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "Last week the First Minister set out a phased plan for Wales to gradually move out of alert level 2 and fully back to alert level 0 from 28th January while continuing to protect public health in Wales. Our cautious, science-led approach will allow us to make sure the signs of improvement continue before we make further changes.

"After January 28 key protections will remain in place. This includes self-isolation rules for all those who test positive for Covid, face-covering rules for most public indoor places and the use of the Covid pass to enter certain events and venues.

"The First Minister will set out the latest changes to Coronavirus restrictions in a press conference on Friday."

A further 23 people have died with coronavirus in Wales, according to latest figures from Public Health Wales.

The data, published on Wednesday, January 19, and covering a 24-hour period up to 9am on January 18, shows 2,136 new positive cases to bring the total to 748,708.

The latest figures for the Office for National Statistics to January 12 show that the rate Covid is spreading in Wales is clearly falling. This is based on population sampling and is not affected by changes to testing rules. In Wales, almost one in 25 people had Covid in Wales in the last week- lower than in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The ONS estimated that 169,100 people in Wales, equivalent to one in 20, had Covid in the previous week. Read all the detail on that here.
