Weight loss drug shortage leads patients to older alternatives

Weight loss drugs like ZepBound and WeGoBe are in high demand.

Weight loss drugs have been gaining popularity in recent years, with medications like ZepBound and WeGoBe becoming highly sought after by patients. However, the increasing demand for these drugs has led to a shortage, making it difficult for many individuals to access them. This shortage, coupled with the high list prices of these medications, has caused frustration among patients who are eager to try them.

According to reports, drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which fall into the new class of weight loss medicines, have experienced shortages alongside their skyrocketing prices. Even patients who meet the qualifying criteria based on their body mass index (BMI) are finding it challenging to obtain these drugs due to insurance coverage limitations. The list prices for these medications can reach nearly $1,000 per month, making them financially inaccessible for many.

Christy Nguyen, one patient who has struggled with accessing weight loss drugs, shared her experience of facing insurance hurdles or encountering shortages when trying to obtain these newer medicines. Surprisingly, her doctor revealed that an alarming 75% of reimbursement requests for the latest medicine, ZepBound, had been rejected.

Consequently, many patients are turning to older weight loss drugs that have been available for decades. Medications like Phentermine and Bupropion, which were commonly used before the emergence of the new class of drugs, are now experiencing a surge in prescription rates. Exclusive data from Epic Research indicates that prescription rates for these older drugs have increased by approximately 30% over the past six years.

While these older drugs may not exhibit the same level of weight loss effectiveness as the newer medications in clinical trials, they can still provide significant benefits. Christy's experience with Ozempic and Mount John showed initial weight loss, but upon losing access to these medications, she saw a rapid regain of about 80% of the weight she had lost. Switching to Bupropion helped halt further weight gain, but the availability of the new drug, ZepBound, prompted her to give it a try.

The journey for patients seeking weight loss treatment can be a rollercoaster ride, filled with obstacles and frustration. Both the shortage of new drugs and the high prices associated with them have contributed to patients exploring alternative options. While the popularity of these weight loss drugs continues to grow, it is essential to address the barriers that limit patient access and ensure that effective treatment options are available to those seeking to lose weight.
