Weight was discussed in only 48 of 123 recorded primary care visits for type 2 diabetes, or 39%, according to a Yale-led study in BMC Primary Care. Clinicians started most of those conversations; only 15% were patient-directed, and bariatric surgery was never discussed.
The study, based on video-recorded visits at Fair Haven Community Health Care in New Haven, Connecticut, also found that clinicians never used the words "overweight" or "obesity." They talked about weight, and sometimes pounds or kilograms, instead.
