Weeks of travel chaos ahead for EK drivers after sewer collapses near cemetery

Drivers face eight weeks of travel disruption after a large section of sewer collapsed near East Kilbride Cemetery.

Scottish Water say a six-metre length section of sewer needs to be replaced - which means Mavor Avenue will close from Monday, July 18.

Three-way temporary traffic lights will be installed and diversions in place.

In a response shared with East Kilbride Central North councillor and council leader, Joe Fagan, Scottish Water say: "A section of sewer approximately six metres long beneath Mavor Avenue close to the cemetery has collapsed and requires to be replaced.

"To carry this out we will need to close Mavor Avenue at its junction with the roundabout on the B783 East Mains Road for approximately eight weeks.

"So that our contractor, George Leslie Ltd, will be able to work safely and access the damaged section of sewer, three-way temporary traffic lights will be installed - on either side of the roundabout on East Mains Road and at its junction with Old Coach Road.

"Traffic will be diverted via B783 East Mains Road, A749 Kingsway, Law Place and Mavor Avenue.

"The proposal is to manually control the temporary lights during peak morning and evening hours to keep traffic flowing. The situation will be kept under constant review outside of these times and remedial action taken if required.

"These traffic management arrangements have been agreed with South Lanarkshire Council."

Scottish Water added: "We appreciate there is likely to be disruption for local customers and businesses and we are doing all that we can to communicate with everyone who may be affected, particularly local schools on their return from the summer holidays.

"As always, we will do all that we can to complete these essential works as quickly and safely as possible and will work with the community to keep disruption to a minimum.

"We would like to thank customers, and road users in advance for their patience and understanding."
