There will be 11 national holidays in the United States this year. Although the first one, New Year's Day, has already passed, another long weekend is approaching in January—a great opportunity for a weekend getaway.
According to federal regulations, when a national holiday falls on a Saturday, it will be observed on the preceding Friday, and if it falls on a Sunday, it will be observed on the following Monday.
However, this rule will not need to be applied to the next national holiday, considering it will fall on a Monday, providing a great chance to take a three-day weekend getaway or simply rest at home for an extra day.
Weekend Getaways in the U.S.: What Are the Upcoming National Holidays in 2024?
The U.S. calendar of national holidays includes a weekend getaway opportunity from next Saturday, January 13th, to January 15, when Martin Luther King Day is observed.
This U.S. national holiday, dedicated to honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday falls on the third Monday of January every year. Interestingly, his actual birthday was on January 15th, 1929, which happened to be a Tuesday.
February will also have a long weekend. Concretely, it will be from Saturday, February 17th, to Monday, February 19th, when Presidents' Day Holiday is observed.
Weekend Getaways: Which Three Months Have No National Holidays?
Ever noticed that after Presidents' Day National Holiday it feels like an eternity before the next long weekend? Well, it's not just a perception; it's because it's a bit more than three months until Memorial Day rolls on May 27.
When it comes to public holidays, the U.S. isn't exactly topping the charts. The United States has one of the lowest numbers of public holidays when compared to Latin American countries, ranking only higher than Mexico (7), Nicaragua (9), and Bolivia (10).
Venezuela takes the lead for the most holidays in Latin America in 2024, boasting a total of 21. Following closely are Chile with 20 and Colombia with 18.
Now, before 2020, the U.S. national holidays were only. In 2021, Congress sanctioned and President Joe Biden enacted Juneteenth Day as the 11th federal holiday on the calendar.
