Weather warning issued by Met Office in North East with fog set to cause travel chaos

The Met Office has issued a weather warning with parts of the North East set to experience disruption as fog sets in.

The leading meteorologists issued a 'Yellow Weather Warning' to the region with fog and mist set to affect areas of Darlington and Durham, in particular, with disruption likely. The Met Office's weather warning is in place between 1:56am and 11:00am today (November 29).

They have warned that fog is likely to cause some travel delays this morning with persisting fog forecast for rural spots across County Durham. Mist and fog is to make way for low cloud as the day develops.

People are being warned of potential travel chaos with delays on buses and trains in the region. In addition, there's a chance that flights may also be delayed or cancelled.

The fog is likely to lead to chilly temperatures with a wintry maximum of 7°C expected.

The Met Office has forecast the following conditions during the day: "Mist and fog slowly lifting into low cloud through the day and breaking in places, but persisting in some rural spots all day.

"Some brighter spells may develop during the afternoon. Chilly, especially where fog does persist. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

As we head into the evening, we are likely to see more mist and fog develop, particularly after dusk with frost forming in some places as the temperature drops below zero to -1 °C.

The Met Office expects the following conditions for this evening: "Mist and fog quickly reforming after dusk and becoming dense in places overnight. Light winds everywhere.

"A frost is possible in places, especially over western hills. Minimum temperature -1 °C."

In light of the incoming mist and fog for areas of the North East, the Met Office have issued a weather warning.

They said: "Areas of fog, dense in places, have developed and will be stubborn to clear through much of this morning. Whilst some fog is likely to persist all day, many places will see this lifting into low cloud or clear by this afternoon.

"Fog is, of course, a major travel hazard which can lead to problems of visibility when travelling."

As the Met Office point out, things to bear in mind when planning your journey are that fog can be very localised, so may not be apparent when you set off, and it can affect air travel and the roads in different ways.

They have issued some pointers as to what to expect as part of their weather warning:

What to expect

  • Slower journey times with delays to bus and train services possible
  • There is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights
