Weather Tomorrow (July 9): IMD says monsoon to cover entire India soon; Heavy rain alert for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand & more. Check full advisory

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of the country on Wednesday, July 9, while stating that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance over the remaining parts of north India within the next two to three days.

According to the IMD, the monsoon is expected to cover the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the north Arabian Sea, completing its advance across the entire country.

Several states, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, are likely to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Southwest monsoon likely to cover entire country soon

The IMD said the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through Barmer, Jodhpur, Rajgarh (Churu district), Bathinda and adjoining areas.

Favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to help the southwest monsoon advance into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab over the next two to three days, bringing monsoon coverage across the entire country.

The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across several regions on July 9, including:

Thunderstorm and strong wind warning for July 9

Wind speeds of 40–60 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 70 kmph at isolated places, are likely over parts of:

Low-pressure area continues to influence rainfall

According to the IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area persists over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh.

The system is expected to move north-northwestwards before curving towards Uttar Pradesh, continuing to draw moisture into large parts of central and northern India.

An offshore trough extending from south Gujarat to central Kerala, together with the monsoon trough stretching across northern India and a Western Disturbance, is also contributing to widespread rainfall activity.

Weather outlook for northwest India

The IMD expects:

  • Widespread rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand through July 14.
  • Fairly widespread rainfall across Punjab on July 9.
  • Continued rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh.
