Weather: Hurricane Kirk remnants to batter UK with heavy gales, rain and snow

Snow has been forecast this week with the remnants of Hurricane Kirk set to send temperatures plummeting.

A mix of sunshine and showers is expected for many over the weekend. A fine day for England and much of Wales is expected on Saturday although there may be outbreaks of rain elsewhere, according to Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick.

All areas of Scotland will “get much colder,” according to the Met Office, while snow could be seen in the highlands from Thursday to Saturday of next week.

Hurricane Kirk is currently maintaining category 4 strength in the central North Atlantic Ocean but is set to lose its status as a hurricane early next.

“The resulting low pressure system will still have the potential to bring disruptive rain and winds to some areas, including parts of the UK, from the middle of next week,” said Chris Bulmer of the Met Office.

Kirk is currently producing winds of 145mph in the mid Atlantic but will likely calm by the time it makes its way to Europe in the middle of next week.

The ex hurricane is expected to bring some disruption to the UK next week although there is still some uncertainty as to what effect it will have.

Scotland, it seems, will bear the brunt of the impact.

The Met Office forecast for later in the week states: “Sunshine and heavy showers for many, with more persistent rain at times in the far north and northeast. Rather blustery. Perhaps turning very wet and windy in the south mid-week.”

As for London, there is set to be rainy and possibly thundery showers in the week ahead

“Monday and Tuesday sunny spells and scattered heavy showers, with a chance of thunder,” the Met Office forecast said.

“Wednesday will have a chance of spells of heavy rain and strong winds... Perhaps becoming rather warm.”

The Met Office has not given any weather warnings for the week ahead.
