Weather forecast for Greater Manchester as 'extreme heat' amber warning extended

The Met Office extended its amber extreme heat weather warning as the country prepares for soaring temperatures across the rest of the week.

The rare warning means high temperatures could lead to a danger to life or potential serious illnesses. Infrastructure could also be affected such as road closures as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

It comes after a number of meteorologists predicted that the UK may see the hottest day ever recorded on Sunday.

The warning had been issued to cover the whole of Sunday - but has now been extended until midnight on Monday. Temperatures on both days are forecast to be well above 30C.

While today will be cloudy, it will still remain quite warm in Greater Manchester with temperatures staying at around 22-23C well into the evening. The Met Office said: "Rather cloudy through the day but mostly dry. Some bright or sunny spells developing at times. Perhaps some low cloud and patchy light rain or drizzle moving into Cumbria later in the day. Maximum temperature 24 °C."

It adds for tonight: "Cloudy into the evening with a little light rain or drizzle over the hills. Becoming largely dry overnight with clear spells. Minimum temperature 9 °C."
