Ireland weather: Expert gives Beast from the East update amid 'dip' in latest weather models

Met Eireann’s forecast shows plunging temperatures this week, but experts have published a positive update regarding the arrival of the Beast from the East.

According to Carlow Weather expert, Alan O’Reilly, although a big dip in temperatures will be seen on Wednesday night heading into Thursday, it’ll remain largely settled with above-average temperatures.

“A brief dip in temperatures Wednesday night into Thursday but the general outlook is for temperatures to be above normal, especially from Friday into next week.

“Largely settled also with high pressure nearby. Will help heating bills and this is why I said no beast from the East!”

Meanwhile, today will feature sunny spells for most areas, with patchy rain and drizzle extending slowly from the northwest - though many areas will stay fully dry.

It’ll be clearer with brighter conditions extending from the northwest later and highs of 8 to 11 degrees are expected in near-calm conditions.

The subzero temperature will arrive tonight for some, however, overall it will be dry but misty with patches of drizzle.

Where clear skies persist some frost will set in with lowest temperatures of -1 to 4 degrees with just light southerly breezes.

On Wednesday it will be largely dry for daylight hours, apart from patchy drizzle across the west and northwest.

A band of rain will develop from the northwest and track eastwards through the late evening.

The best of any sunny spells will occur in the south and east and highest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees are expected.

A band of rain will continue to move down from the northwest overnight on Wednesday. Some frost and ice will form later under clearing skies and lows of -2 to +3 degrees are expected - coldest in the south.

Thursday will feature a cold, frosty, or icy start but with good sunshine. Most areas will stay dry with light westerly breezes, though a few passing showers will occur across northern counties.

It’ll be cool but pleasant with highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees. Some frost is expected early in the night, ahead of increasing cloud and patchy drizzle, mainly across the west. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees are expected, in moderate southwest winds.

Friday will be rather dull and breezy with low clouds and some outbreaks of light rain or drizzle.

Some sunny spells are likely too though across the midlands and east and highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

As for the weekend, the forecaster says: “Mostly dry with occasional rain or drizzle. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees with light southerly breezes”.
