"We’ve been a rock band, we’ve been pop stars, and then we became dinosaurs. But if you can live through the dinosaur period you become a legend..." The epic saga of Nazareth

LONDON - 7th JUNE: Scottish rock band Nazareth posed by The Mall in London on 7th June 1972. Left to right: guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, vocalist Dan McCafferty and drummer Darrell Sweet.

Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew – these days the only living member of Nazareth – is sitting in the Pitfirrane Hotel in Fife telling us the story of his extraordinary band. It is 2004, and sitting opposite him is singer Dan McCafferty. The two men met on their very first day at school, aged five. Asked to share a double desk, they became best friends from that moment on.

For the overwhelming majority of that time they were in bands together. Nazareth triumphed against all the odds, experiencing glory and tragedy along the way, and with Pete they continue to tour to the present day. Like the Pitfirrane Hotel, the group have patently seen better days, and were never too glamorous in the first place. Dan died in December 2022. Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton in July that same year. But in this archive interview they told us their extraordinary story, from wedding band to rock legends.
