Zip World opened its brand-new activity, Tower Climber, in Rhigos this week and I joined the first group of the day to tackle the obstacle course.
At 30 metres high, the new attraction is the biggest of its kind in the UK and features 69 different coal-mining themed elements to conquer.
Tower Climber is three storeys high, with a dedicated lower level for children aged three and over. From suspended platforms, to moving carts and tightropes, this is the perfect activity for adventure goers or families.
As soon as I arrived I was greeted by the friendly staff and given a detailed safety talk while being harnessed. Feeling nervous but excited, the group and I started on level one.
I didn't think I had a fear of heights, as I have previously completed Velocity — the fastest zip line in the world. But while 30 metres aloft in the air, trying to walk over platforms, tightropes, and cross a rock climbing wall, I'll confess - my knees began to wobble.
I had an hour-and-a-half to complete the three levels, which have different routes of difficulty under the categories of blue, red and black. I managed to complete the easier routes of the levels, but I was not as adventurous as some members of the group.
For thrill seekers, you can also complete the bell challenge on level three. Those who are brave enough can walk a steel plank and reach out over the edge to ring the bell — personally, I did not fancy trying this.
It was 27c in Rhigos today, so I was definitely feeling the heat and got a full body workout while tackling, what felt like, the never ending obstacles.
I had a great morning and it was quite an experience, with everyone from the group helping and laughing at each other, but I was happy to have both feet back on the ground by the end of the session.
After completing the adventure course, you can also book to go on the Phoenix zip line, which has a route over Llyn Fawr, but unfortunately it was fully booked today. You can also enjoy the scenic views of Rhigos mountain and Pen y Fan while having lunch at their onsite cafe, Cegin Glo Bar and Bistro.
Zip World Tower is within Rhigos mountain, located at the former Tower Colliery site, which was the oldest consistently working deep-coal mine in the UK up until its closure in 2008. Zip World bosses say they hope the attraction will help retain and maintain the mine's history.
