We try Nottinghamshire village fish and chip shop and find it 'faultless'

We all love a trip down to the chippy, don’t we? Whether you take a short walk down to your local chip shop or a drive down, there’s always that one chippy we find ourselves going back to.

Usually, the chip shop I go to is Captain Cod on 141-143 Perry Road, Sherwood but I’ve found another chippy that deserves all the glory…in Ruddington. The Ruddington Fish Bar is on 2 Church Street.

The small chip shop which doesn't have any dine-in options is the perfect choice for a takeaway. Whether it’s a midday treat or for Friday night supper, those who live in Ruddington village are very lucky to have such a top notch fish bar.

On arrival at the Ruddington Fish Bar, it wasn’t only me patiently waiting to get served. There were a few people waiting to have their lunch. I can't imagine what the clearly popular shop is like in the evening!

The fish bar has Halloween decorations up including a witch with a broom in the corner. With a lot on display under the heat: pies, battered sausages, fish, plain sausages; I knew exactly what I was going to get.

Just plain fish and chips. Call me boring but I’m not really a fan of mushy peas (I’m a garden peas fan), and I’m not a fan of curry sauce or gravy on chips.

Just fish and chips drowned in the right amount of salt and vinegar. After I had found a spot to sit in the village, watching shoppers go by and people running for the NCT number 10 bus that goes from Ruddington to the city centre, my first bite was glorious.

For £7.99 I got a large cod and chips. You get plenty of the chips served into a takeaway cardboard box.

The chips are golden and crispy with soft potato inside. You could hear the crunch of the batter on the fish.

To me, the batter is always the best bit. Some chip shops do free battered bits which are lovely when mixed in with your chips.

The batter was crumbly with fresh cod on the inside that was piping hot with steam coming out of it. When I’m next in Ruddington, I will have to go back to the Ruddington Fish Bar.

I may have to try the locally home-made fish cake for £2.79 with the chips. Bargain.

I give this fish bar a 9/10, it’s the perfect takeaway - if only the store was bigger so that you could sit in on a rainy day but the food was impeccably faultless and I think that fish and chip lovers need to try it if they haven’t already.
