It’s that time of year again as Shrove Tuesday falls on March 1. So whether you’re wanting to have pancakes for breakfast, lunch or dinner. we’ve reviewed ready-made mixes from five different UK supermarkets. Our community reporter, Keimae Blake, went on the hunt to find the best one.
Personally, I love pancake day. For both children and adults, it’s just a bit of fun. You can dress your pancake however you want. I like mine with chocolate spread and sprinkles or maybe ice cream and fruit. It’s whatever floats your boat, really.
As you'll see from the pictures below, I'm not the best pancake maker, but I gave it a go.
Tesco
First up is Tesco and I must say, the pancake itself was really bland. The pancake didn’t really taste of anything. As I ate it, I was expecting it to get better but nothing. With toppings, of course, the pancake tasted a little better but the Tesco Pancake Shaker Traditional Mix where you just add water - even at just £1 - isn’t worth it. I’d rate this pancake mix 1/10.
Waitrose
Next is Waitrose and, first things first, I have to say how smooth the mix was after I had given it a shake. These pancakes are the most flippable ones and they tasted even better. Thick, fluffy and soft. The mix makes up to 16 pancakes as well. The only downside (and it’s minor) is that you have to add an egg along with water to the mix. With or without toppings, this pancake mix went down a treat and for 85p more than Tesco's at £1.85, I would definitely pay that again. I rate Waitrose’s pancakes a 10/10. No complaints.
Sainsbury's
Sainsbury’s was my next taste test and I was very disappointed. I tried many attempts at making the perfect pancake with this mix but it just wouldn't work. These pancakes aren't very flippable as they kept sticking to the non-stick frying pan and they tasted even worse. For £1.10, these pancakes with or without toppings weren't worth it. I would score this mix 1/10.
Lidl
Next up is Lidl and I was very pleased with the taste of these pancakes - they did not disappoint at all. Without toppings, this pancake had just the right amount of sweetness to it. I can’t think of anything bad to say about these pancakes, especially for only 99p. For that outcome and that taste, that to me is a proper bargain. I rate this mix, which makes around 12 to 15 pancakes, 10/10.
Marks & Spencer
Last but not least is M&S and these pancakes, where you just add water and shake, were great. Without toppings, they tasted amazing and even better with toppings (I covered them in maple syrup). My amateur pancake-making didn't do this M&S mix justice but take my word for it - they tasted great. The pancake could have, however, been a little sweeter like Waitrose and Lidl's but they’re still worth the £1. I rate these pancakes 9/10.
So there you have it. For me, Lidl and Waitrose had the best mixes, both providing enough for plenty of pancakes and offering good value for money.
