There's nothing like a good old buttery crumpet to kick off your day, but which supermarket does it best?
Crumpets are known for their moreish taste, especially when lathered in butter and paired up with a cuppa, but some do end up tasting better than others. This begs the question, does it really matter where you get your crumpets from?
Some shoppers like to play it safe and stick with the classic Warburtons variety priced at 95p for six, but others might not be so fussed. With that being said, we purchased own brand crumpets from Lidl, Aldi and M&S to see which one was best in terms of taste and value.

Butter at the ready! Here's our verdict.
Lidl 'Deluxe' 6 Sourdough Crumpets
I absolutely love a crumpet. Although I don't have them much, when I do have them I kick myself for leaving it so long! Naturally, I lather them in loads of butter when they're nice and hot so it all seeps through the holes, and pair mine up with a nice cup of tea. I usually go for Warburtons, purely because I didn't actually know that some supermarkets offer their own brand crumpets.
The Lidl 'Deluxe' crumpets were the only ones I could find at my local Lidl, so I'm unaware if they offer any cheaper alternatives. Priced at 79p for six, I was pretty impressed though.
I spread the butter across the crumpet and took a big bite. One word - heavenly. The crumpet was just the right amount of chewy and fluffy on the inside, and didn't go hard at the bottom like some do.
Although the crumpet was a little claggy, it's sort of expected when you're eating something like a crumpet, so that didn't put me off at all. These crumpets were absolutely delicious for the price, and a little cheaper than Warburtons too.
I'd easily make a swap to the Lidl 'Deluxe' crumpets, to me, they tasted exactly the same, if not better. I really enjoyed the sourdough texture and lets just say I struggled to just have the one.

Aldi Village Bakery Crumpets 6 Pack
I couldn't believe these were only 25p when I spotted them on the Aldi shelf, and quickly into my basket they went. I love crumpets - they make a great snack when it's not quite time for tea, but you're starting to get a bit peckish.
'Fluffy crumpets' the Aldi Village Bakery packaging tells you in great big letters, but when I opened them up it was more like broken crumpets as a couple of them had crumbled somewhat in the packet.
The crumpets looked just as tasty as the Warburtons ones I usually buy and felt nice and squidgy too. After a short stint in the toaster, I slathered on a bit of Lurpak and a spread of strawberry jam before tucking in.
Unfortunately once I did, things went downhill. The crumpets were really plain in flavour, in fact I ended up putting more jam on just to try and enjoy it. They were also quite rubbery in texture and the base went a bit hard, which spoiled the taste. I'll be paying for a pricier pack next time and hopefully have a more enjoyable crumpet experience.

M&S 6 Ultimate Crumpets
I love a lightly toasted crumpet smothered in butter and jam, and have had a variety of brands over the years. This was my first time having M&S crumpets, as I usually go for a cheaper option.
When I visited M&S, I could only find the pack of 6 Ultimate Crumpets which looked nice and were a decent size. £1.20 is quite pricey compared to other brands, though, so I expected perfection!
I tried the toasted crumpet with just a little bit of butter at first, but I couldn't get much flavour. However, the texture was lovely - lightly crisped on the outside and underneath, but soft on the inside.
The taste of the crumpet definitely improved after I added the jam, but I have to say I couldn't really tell the difference between the M&S crumpet and cheaper options I've had in the past.
