'We thought Boris was bad...': What people in Wales have been saying about Prime Minister Liz Truss

On the WalesOnline social media pages, we published a bit of advice for the Prime Minister on exactly how not to run a Government. We thought she might find it useful following her administration's u-turn on the 45p rate of income tax.

We pointed out that it's not a great look to introduce tax cuts for the richest funded by a real-term cut to benefits, nor was it a brilliant idea to spend nine days insisting you won't change your mind, only to change it on the 10th day. WalesOnline readers certainly had some opinions to share about our advice to the PM, too.

One reader, Geraint, said: "We thought that Boris [was] bad. But now we’ve gone from the boiling fat into the fire. Nothing changes with the Tories. Hit the lowest paid and increase the benefits to the richest."

Another, Phil, provided a potential explanation for the Prime Minister's actions over the last week or so: "Hanlon's razor... 'never attribute to planned malice that which is adequately explained by sheer stupidity.'" But Angela was willing to give the UK Government a bit more credit: "Remember they have only been in power for a few weeks. Give them a chance to learn and improve. They listened and turned. That was brave."

Others were quick to point out that, well, Angela's statement depends on what you mean by 'they'. Liz Truss has only been in power for a few weeks but her party has been at the helm for the best part of 12 years (if you include the stint in coalition with the Lib Dems).

A reader named Richard offered a scathing view, saying the PM "changed her mind on the legalisation of cannabis, abolition of the Royal Family, changed Parties to get into Parliament, supported Remain in the EU referendum, changes her mind on whether France is an ally or not and now does one of the fastest U turns ever on the abolition of the 45p top tax rate."

One Twitter user warned: "Westminster single-handedly driving #IndyWales #Annibyniaeth. Whether it's the party in power, or knowing that the alternative party likely no better."

Reader John suggested the PM could "blame the chancellor" for the political mess the Government had ended up in - and said: "He did it without discussing it with anybody" - possibly a reference to the Prime Minister claiming in her interview with Laura Kuenssberg that the axing of the 45p rate was the chancellor's idea, and wasn't discussed with the cabinet.

Another, Terry, suggested we write an alternative article on "how not to run a devolved nation for 25 years" and give it to Welsh Labour, while Tracy echoed: "How not to run a government is under Welsh Labour."

But it was probably Lesley who captured a mood that people at both ends of the political spectrum could agree on: "If this was a comedy sketch it would seem too far fetched. Unbelievable."
