We simulated Liverpool season with 2023/24 fixtures and there was final day drama

Liverpool's fixtures for the 2023/24 Premier League season have been confirmed, with the Reds facing a tough visit to Chelsea in their opening game of the campaign.

The 2022/23 season was one to forget for Liverpool, with the Reds' struggle for the majority of the term seeing Jurgen Klopp's side finish fifth in the Premier League. Liverpool ended the season in good form, going 11 unbeaten including a seven-game win streak, but it was the rest of the ties that let them down as they missed out on a spot in the Champions League for the first time since the 2015/16 season.

The Reds will be looking to get back to the top of the table this time around, and it starts with clashes against Chelsea, Bournemouth and Newcastle in their first three. The first Merseyside derby will take place at Anfield on October 21, whilst the Reds take on Man United at home on December 16 and Man City at home on March 9, 2024.

So, how could Liverpool perform in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign? Let's take a look.

To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2023 editor to update the Premier League with the latest teams, transfers and of course, the confirmed fixtures. Using FM23 to run the simulation, we then simulated the entire 2023/24 season to see how the Reds got on.

Opening game: Chelsea 1-3 Liverpool (August 13, 2023)

Despite their recent record of stalemates, Liverpool were able to put an end to the draws, beating Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in the simulation. Reece James put the Blues ahead within the first minute, but a Mohamed Salah brace followed by a Luis Diaz strike confirmed the three points for Klopp's side.

Biggest win: Liverpool 6-0 Crystal Palace (April 13, 2024)

When Liverpool took on Crystal Palace in the simulation they were in their best form, and that was reflected by the scoreline as the Reds picked up their biggest win of the season. Cody Gakpo notched a first-half hat-trick before Nunez, Fabinho and Diaz scored after the break to win 6-0.

Biggest shock: Liverpool 4-0 Man City (January 13, 2024)

After a 2-1 loss in the reverse fixture, the Reds produced their best performance of the season at Anfield, battering Man City 4-0. After going into the break 1-0 up thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold, goals from Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister secured a 4-0 win for the Reds.

Derby days: Liverpool vs Everton

Liverpool's recent history of draws at Goodison Park continued in the simulation, with the Reds drawing 1-1 with Everton after Demari Gray cancelled out Salah's opener. But, the reverse fixture saw Klopp's side pick up three points at Anfield, with Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota both getting on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win.

Final game: Liverpool 3-1 Wolves (May 19, 2024)

The Reds ended the season in the same way they did in the 2021/22 season, beating Wolves 3-1 at Anfield. Like two seasons ago, Wolves took an early lead, but a Jota brace either side of a Virgil van Dijk goal confirmed the three points

2023/24 Premier League final standings:

Liverpool ended the season on a 10-game win streak, with the Reds and City in a head-to-head title battle for the entire season. But, despite ending on the same point tally as City, the Reds missed out on the title by an agonising amount, with City defending the title due to their better goal difference.

The top 11 in the Premier League from the 2023/24 (Football Manager 23)

Both Liverpool and City won 29, drew four, lost five and scored 75, but Pep Guardiola's side conceded six goals fewer, ultimately the deciding factor in the title battle.

Overall, according to Football Manager 2023's Premier League simulation for the 2023/24 campaign, Liverpool could show major improvement next season, but they could just miss out on the Premier League title once again. The simulation predicts the Reds will beat the 90-point mark once again, but City's superior defence would hand them the league on goal difference.
