'We’re just looking' - Sheffield Wednesday Tom Cannon transfer stance emerges amid Everton links

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has appeared to shut down speculation linking his side with a move for Tom Cannon next month.

The Everton youngster, who impressed in his first season as a fully-fledged under-23 player in 2021/22, scoring eight goals in 23 appearances to finish as the team's leading marksman, has been linked with a loan move away from Goodison Park next month.

The Republic of Ireland youth international, after impressing for Paul Tait’s side, was then handed his first-team debut during the Carabao Cup defeat to Bournemouth last month when he replaced Neal Maupay with nine minutes remaining.

The forward then made his Premier League debut just five days later against the same opposition in the same stadium, though once again it came on a difficult day for the Blues as they were beaten 3-0 by the Cherries.

In between his first appearances for the first-team, Cannon also bagged a brace as Tait’s side came from behind to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Premier League International Cup before he was selected for the club’s trip to Australia.

After playing against Scottish giants Celtic, he then came on against Western Sydney Wanderers and went on to bag his first senior goal for the club during the 5-1 win. Cannon then fired a memorable stoppage-time winner as Everton booked their place in the last-16 of the Papa John's Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town at Goodison Park. He was on the scoresheet again last night with a fine effort away to Lincoln City.

Speaking to the ECHO back in October, Tait revealed that a number of his side will head out on loan in January. He said: “When these boys go out on loan in January, which will be quite a few of them, the opportunities then arise for the under-18s.”

But when asked, following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Exeter City at the weekend, if he was thinking about bringing in another forward in January, Moore replied: “No, we’re just looking at the team in terms of where we’re at.

“We threw caution to the wind against Exeter. I whipped Smudger and Josh off, I put Mallik, Greggers and Pato on - and it paid off. Josh and Smudger had chances but didn’t capitalises, but Pato took his and Greeters looked sharp on the ball for us.

“It changed up the dynamic, and last year we wouldn’t really have had that dynamic - but we have now. It’s about utilising those players at the top of the pitch, and finding the balance, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
