"We’d love to do it": Fan requests spark a playful reply from Double Fine, teasing a return of an iconic OG Xbox platformer

Psychonauts 2.

Double Fine, acquired by Microsoft in June 2019, has maintained its creative independence, recently releasing titles like Keeper and Kiln. The studio has now taken to X (Formerly Twitter) in response to a fan asking for a remake of the game that first put it on the map: Psychonauts.

First released in 2005, Psychonauts has since become closely associated with Xbox following Microsoft’s acquisition of Double Fine and the release of Psychonauts 2 in 2021. On X, a fan reached out asking for a remake in the same artistic style as Psychonauts 2, a game that was well received by critics.

This led Double Fine to respond with a tongue-in-cheek reply, stating on X:
“Day 1 of acknowledging that we agree - this would indeed be amazing, and we'd love to do it... one day.…

I wish there was more to go on, but in an era that's already full of remakes, it’s not that hard to imagine a future where the team updates Psychonauts for modern audiences. Given the cult following the series has, it would likely perform well, too.

I’ll admit, I only have vague memories of the first game, mostly watching my brother play it, but I do remember enjoying what I saw, so I’d definitely jump into a remake — if my backlog allowed it, that is.

That said, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Would a remake of Psychonauts interest you, or would you rather see Double Fine move forward with Psychonauts 3?

There’s a strong case to be made for both, whether it’s revisiting a cult classic with modern visuals or continuing the story where Psychonauts 2 left off.
