'We are already' - Diogo Jota speaks out on 'very hard' Liverpool season

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has issued a defiant response to the disappointing campaign as the Portugal talisman opened up about his injury troubles.

A serious calf injury curtailed the former Wolves attacker's midseason with the problem forcing him to miss the World Cup in Qatar. As a result, he was restricted to just 22 Premier League matches after missing 18 games for the Reds.

Despite the issue, he returned in time to help Liverpool qualify for the Europa League but still struggled with ongoing problems - including a back injury. His absence was felt as he was sidelined alongside attacking partner Luis Diaz but he did make an impact with seven goals in the second-half of the season including three braces.

In a post on Instagram, Jota said: "It was a very hard season, for me personally with all the injuries and not being able to help the team, but we are already targeting the next one.

"See you soon Reds."

The post from Jota follows on from Mohamed Salah's 'devastated' message after Manchester United's win over Chelsea in their penultimate game of the season secured a top-four finish in Erik ten Hag's first season.

Jurgen Klopp's side are facing an important summer as they look to upgrade the squad ahead of their quest to improve on last season's fifth-place finish.

After their poor start to the campaign and a handful of chastening defeats on the way, finishing in the European places looked to be impossible until they pieced together an important winning run. Their seven-match winning streak catapulted them into the Europa League places.
